– Adding onto the intro, there will be drinks and snacks provided. There is a chance for rain, but hopefully the thunder will hold off so we are not crammed into the building.
– Please remind your guests, children, and maybe yourselves that our streets are two-way – especially at curves and hills – and to do their best to stay on their side of the road. Last week, I witnessed a car ahead of me quickly veer to the edge of the road and slam on the brakes approaching a hill on Barnack with a near miss by someone passing us in the middle of the road going at an unreasonable speed. If you do not feel comfortable passing a vehicle if there are parked card on both sides of the road, please slow down where you are comfortable doing so. Our streets are not really considered ‘yield streets’ where someone must stop to allow opposing traffic to pass, but it can seem like that. Simply slowing down a little when approaching a curve to see if it is safe can prevent an accident.
– There will be a shredding event on Saturday, May 18, at the Rolling Forest Pool at 7011 Flax Street, 9am-12pm, presented by Ghen Property. This will benefit ECHO. You can ger more information at www.ghenshred.com.
– The Community Yard Sale will be in June this year. The exact day is TBD. For new residents, this is a yard sale on your own property, but the information of locations is shared throughout the community. It is not a sale at a single location where you get an area to sell your stuff. If you want to help coordinate, please let me know. Helping mainly entails putting up signs at participating properties and directional signs at intersections.
– Following up from the last newsletter, I forgot to include that Fairfax County’s GIS Department has a lot of the information needed to update the Community Map available for free. You just need the knowledge on how to get it and modify it for our needs. I do not know if this can help a Scouts group acquire a badge, but I will be signing off on any volunteer hours for getting it done.
– For new residents, and a reminder to people renting out their homes to pass along, the County Noise Ordinance prohibits noises that can affect neighbors between 10PM to 7AM. This means having music in your backyard to having work crews at your house. Our community is relatively quiet where most people respect their neighbors and abide by the time limits. If you have a neighbor who is violating this, I suggest being a friendly neighbor and asking them to be a good neighbor. If they are not friendly, you can report them to the non-emergency police at 703-691-2131. They will first get a warning, but repeated reports could end in a fine.
– Someone reported dilapidated vehicles in the community. They did not say where. If you have a vehicle with an expired registration or safety inspection parked on the street, you can get a ticket. If your vehicle is damaged and undrivable, it is a parking violation and can be reported to the non-emergency police at 703-691-2131. If an inoperable vehicle is on your property, it can be reported, and you can be given a 30-day warning to comply with the code. You will then be given a 10-day notice of violation. You can get more information on the County’s website at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/report-inoperable-vehicle .
