Village News, 8/6/20

Dear West Springfield Neighbor / Friend,

I have more copies of the current directory available if you want to give a copy to your new neighbors. Ask that you also give them information about our civic association.

Security – We continue to have folks rummage through parked cars at night or very early in the morning. He, she or they haven’t yet forced entry into a vehicle, but please don’t tempt them by leaving valuables in plain sight in your car even if it is locked and even if it is your garage. If you become a target, report it to the police, non-emergency number (703/691-2131). Lastly, when you return to the village late at night or in the wee hours of the morn, drive around a bit before going home just to see if you observe someone doing something they shouldn’t. Do not confront, but do call the police and record as much detail about the person and make, model, color and ideally license plate number of their car.

Bees & Wasps – I disturbed a bee or wasp nest on the ground and was stung by 3 or more. Their sting was much more painful than all the many other stings I’ve had over the years. Within a few minutes I experienced unusual reactions including sweating, tremendous ringing in my ears, slurred speech, diminished vision and loss of equilibrium. I actually blacked out and fell. Never had such a reaction even including when I was stung by a scorpion in Panama. If I have them in my yard, assume that you also have them. Hard to spot under they come out to protect.

Random Acts of Kindness – the real reason for telling you that I got stung was to acknowledge my neighbors who came to my aid. Thanks Stacie & Bernie Koehle and also Jason Henry.

COVID-19 Update – The latest from Fairfax County concerning the virus can be found here. Apparently there is a new COVIDWISE app which will notify you if you have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. See more about this app at

FCPS Update - The virtual beginning of the school year will begin 8 September. Read Superintendent Brabrand's full update, along with the virtual learning schedule here. If a student does not already have an FCPS laptop, your child’s school will send information on the laptop distribution process.

Center for Voter Information – Did you receive the letter encouraging you to vote by mail or absentee? Did you notice that the pre-paid return envelope is addressed incorrectly to Fairfax City Registrar? That isn’t our registrar, nor the correct address. Go to for the correct information and procedures.

Neighborhood Dinner Food Drops – Tim & Jenna Barron have hosted two neighborhood food drops recently and want to hear from folks if you have a restaurant suggestion for future events. Also let them know if you own/operate a local restaurant and would like to participate. Pick up will normally be at RVES the evening that works best for the restaurant.

Please email Tim and Jenna at with your input. Their intent is to coordinate at least one a month.

Civic Association Membership – We need 350 households to pay their $10.00 dues for FY21 (1 October 2020 – 30 September 2021) in order to cover the expected expenses for the year. That’s 80% of the village households. Shoot, we don’t even need the membership form, but do need your: 1) First and Last Name of 1st Resident, First and Last Name of 2nd Resident, 2) Street Address, 3) Phone Number and 4) Email Address. Indicate if we may list your name(s) and address in the directory (Yes or No), list your phone number (Y or N) and lastly may we list your email address (Y or N)? If you answer “no” to 1st question – the other two answers are also “no”.

If you use the form, complete and send it and your dues payment to “CAWSV”, P.O. Box 2204, Springfield, VA 22152. But know ye that we’ll make only one visit to the Post Office each week (Wednesdays) and make a monthly run to bank to deposit checks and cash.

The FY21 form is located on our website ( and also on our Village FaceBook Group. I can also send it to you if you want.

Or, you can pay $11.00 using PayPal by clicking “Here”. The extra $1.00 covers the charge PayPal exacts on our transactions.

Membership Chair Julia Hale or I will send you a confirmation email receipt and put you into that group who have already joined and who do not receive these type reminder articles in their enews.

But, if you do decide to not join or renew your membership, please let me know so we can save on hard-copy newsletters and postage.

Happy Birthday – Katrina Cooley (aka “Boomer”).

Stay safe; stay healthy and happy.

John Cooley, CAWSV
