1 – Jeff Carter posted about upcoming access restriction to Springfield Village Dr on the Face Book group. He was nice enough to give me this summary along with new information:
Per VDOT, access to and from Rolling Road at Springfield Village Drive will be closed from March 23rd to April 17th (weather permitting) due to the widening project. Vehicles will need to use Birmingham Lane and Barnack Road (or Harland Drive) to access Rolling Road and to get into the neighborhood. Detour signs have been placed and will be ‘unveiled’ soon.
A flag person stationed at Birmingham Lane to assist in egress from the neighborhood during construction working hours. Parking on Birmingham will not be permitted during this period.
If warranted, FCPD or construction staff will be in place at Barnack and Rolling Road to assist in traffic flow during school hours.
Per the FCPS Transportation Department, the school bus stop at Sherbrooke Ct. will be temporarily moved to the corner of Ontario St. and Springfield Village Drive until access to Rolling Road is reopened.
I reached out to the VDOT Project Manager for any additional information and for updates as this work progresses. I will send any information out as I receive it.
2 – There have been reports of scams involving the IRS as tax season has started. The EZ-Pass scam has started up again as well. For both, people are receiving texts or phone calls saying you have fines or penalties and need to give bank and/or credit card information. Texts will have a website to go to pay. Please keep in mind that neither the IRS nor EZ-Pass call or text people and they always mail you a letter. Scammers have the technology to show a different name or number on caller ID. If you have any doubt, call their office on their main line to find out if there is an issue. Report any calls or texts as spam.
3 – A parent asked me to share the information about their son’s fundraising effort for attending out of state crew regattas. Here is what he wants to say:
Hi my name is Henry and I am a junior at WSHS. I am a member of the WSHS Crew team this year and I really love it! I have created a fun way to fundraise for my out of state crew regattas in a way that benefits you. Let me “Egg Your Yard!”
What is that you ask? I sell plastic Easter eggs that I fill with candy that I put across your front lawn the evening before Easter so your family wakes up to an egg hunt Easter morning! Let me help make Easter extra fun this year. Thanks for your support! Please click here for more information and to sign up. http://bit.ly/3PbSQet
4 – With the variety of weather events we had the last few weeks, it is good for you to remind your new drivers about things to remember. The most important thing to do is to put your headlights on. It is partly for you to see with, but more important for others to be able to see you. I saw two near collisions during the heavy fog with someone slamming their brakes because they did not see the car in front of them because their taillights were not on. This also applies for when it is raining, snowing, or during dusk and dawn. You can make it a teaching moment if you are driving your children and asking them if the car ahead of you is hard to see. If they say yes, tell them that it is because they do not have their taillights on. You can then ask if they do not put their headlights on in similar conditions. If they say yes, you can reply that they are doing to others what the car in front of you is doing to you. With more black, gray, and white cars out recently, they do a better job of blending in with the sky during bad weather or low sunlight.
5 – From the Braddock District Newsletter:
Native Seedling Sale Now Underway
The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) is accepting orders for their 2026 Annual Native Seedling Sale Program, through which they provide native trees and shrubs to Fairfax County residents at low cost. All seedlings are native to Virginia and were chosen with advice from the Fairfax County Urban Forestry Management Division and Virginia Department of Forestry.
Two packages are available featuring shrubs and trees that were selected because of their value to wildlife. They are a bargain at $20 per package. The first package, “Berry Bonanza”, includes two of each of the following species: Canadian Serviceberry and American Elderberry. The second package, “Pick of the Patch,” includes two each of American Plum and Common Pawpaw.
In addition to the benefits to the environment and wildlife, sale proceeds support the stewardship and engagement programs offered by NVSWCD such as local reforestation efforts, volunteer stream monitoring, their local Envirothon high school competition, storm drain marking and education, Green Breakfasts, and others.
Visit NVSWCD's Storefront for more information and to make a purchase while supplies last!
