1 – Thanks to those who have renewed. Also, thanks to those who asked if they are current. I have only had four people renew for multiple years while already being good for one or two years.
I messed up the mailing address in the last newsletter. It should be PO Box 2204. The last newsletter said 2024. I did get an envelope with the incorrect address, so be sure to thank the post office staff the next time you see them. I processed checks received from the mailbox since 10/21. If you unintentionally mailed a check to the wrong address and do not see it processed in a few days, please let me know and I will pick up a check and reimburse you a stamp.
If you have not renewed and do not see the reason, there have been several improvements to the community because of the Civic Association. The biggest one is the signal light at Barnack. That is from the Civic Association speaking with Virginia legislators to voice our concerns for a safer street. The result was the signal light. The cell phone tower at the pool is another result of Civic Association action. VDOT heard our concerns regarding the upcoming Rolling Rd project as well. I can send you a pdf created by the former President if you want more reasons.
If you are not sure if you have paid, please send an email to president@westspringfieldvillage.org and ask. If you have someone else that could renew, coordinate with them to send a payment. It is better to see two payments instead of no payments. If you are not sure if your information is updated, please so do with our Google Form at https://forms.gle/yf6dkx5wRFrvuHdm9 . If you want to pay online via PayPal, here are the links for renewing:
· Renew for 1 year - $11 (FY24)
· Renew for 2 years - $21 (FY24 & FY25)
· Renew for 3 years - $31 (FY24, FY24 & FY26)
You can also mail a check to PO Box 2204, Springfield, VA 2252. Make checks out to ‘CAWSV’. It is $10 a year, up to three years.
You can also drop off a check or cash at the drop box at 6919 Vancouver Rd.
2 – The Annual Meeting was October 12. It was a great event with engaged residents and delicious cookies and brownies. Thanks again to our hostess for letting us use her back porch.
We might have a new Vice President? One person said they were interested but did not respond to my follow-up emails nor say they changed their mind. They won by unanimous vote. I informed them of their victory but have not heard back if they have accepted the position or not.
We have a new Membership Chair. Please give applause to Robert Ray for nominating himself and accepting the position after the unanimous vote.
A draft of the Meeting Minutes was recently sent to the Board for Review. Once it is revised, it will be made public for comment.
One new item was the interest in creating a Chair for Social Events. I need to confirm if the Board can just elect to create this or not. If the position is made official, I will look ask for people who would be interested in doing it. The person is chosen by a Board vote.
3 – The Company Referral section of the community website was brought up during the Annual Meeting. There is not much on it because people stopped adding companies. There was interest to wipe it clean and start up a new one.
From our webmaster Robert Havey:
The best way to add a business is to email me at havey@dtwod.com. They need to include the contractor’s (company) name, phone number, email address for a good contact, and URL if they have a website as well as the name of the recommender, the kind of project done (roof repair, lawn service, auto repair, etc.) and a short blurb saying what a good job they did.
There was also an email I received form a neighbor looking for major house repairs due to damage from the recent storms. If you have any companies in mind, please let me know and I will pass it along.
4 – This is from a neighbor:
Missing Newspapers: A neighbor on SVD is a regular Washington Post subscriber. On three occasions in a ten-day period the paper has been missing from the driveway. The route manager has kindly provided replacement papers, but this has happened too often to be a carrier mistake problem. If anyone else has experienced what they believe to be an unusually high occurrence of "lost" papers, please share your experiences and possible solutions with Dan Emrick, dsemrick@protonmail.com. Thanks. (He did give me permission to include his email address)
5 – Something from another neighbor:
Who doesn’t love cookie dough! Who wants to be able to complete holiday shopping from their couch? We are selling holiday goodies to raise funds for the Class of 2024 All Night Grad Party which will be held at the St James.
The site is up through Nov 10 https://www.shopfund.com/Shop?sid=2114238&t=EM
All items can be shipped to your house with the exception of cookie dough which will be delivered to the high school the week of December 2.
I will gladly taste test any cookies for you.
6 – This Saturday is the Grand Opening of the new Animal Shelter in Lorton at 8875 Lorton Rd, Lorton, VA.
