Village News, 9/5/19

Dear West Springfield Village Neighbor / Friend,

Short report today.

In this edition:

Lost Cat Reunited with Family – Enough Said; Right

            Membership Drive

            Household Trash

            Orion Home Improvements, LLC

CAWSV FY20 Membership Drive – We are anxious for you to join or renew your membership in our civic association. We’ll need 350 dues-paying members to cover expected expenses next fiscal year. Right now, we are just under half way there. Shoot, we don’t even need the form, but do need: First and Last Name of 1st Resident, First and Last Name of 2nd Resident, Address, Phone Number and Email Address. Indicate if we may list your name(s) and address in the directory (Yes or No), list your phone number (Y or N) and lastly may we list your email address (Y or N)? If you answer no to 1st question – the other two answers are also no.

FY20 dues are again just $10.00 per household for the year. You can mail your dues and directory listing instructions to CAWSV, P.O. Box 2204, Springfield, VA 22152. Make check payable to “CAWSV”.  Or, you can pay $11.00 using PayPal by clicking “Here”. The extra $1.00 covers the charge PayPal exacts on our transactions.

Now and then we need to employ all of our communications capabilities to get the word out to as many as we can as quickly as we can. We just had such a need when a family cat went missing. Imagine you felt the same about your pets as does this family – suspect you also would want to cover all the bases using facebook, enews and our website. You can and should be in each even if you do not join or renew in the CAWSV. We use it only for CAWSV business and will follow your directives about posting or not in the next directory  If you have decided to not join, please provide the same information as in the above paragraph (names, address, phone and email address).

Rolling Road Project – VDOT has offered to prepare a schematic of your plat with imposed lines indicating property acquisition, permanent utility access easements and temporary construction easements. I asked that they do so for each of the 57 homes that will have immediate impact and send to me. If they prefer sending directly to you, please let me know your name, address and email address to forward with the next request. Bob Havey, Chris Creasi and Betty Carper has already been submitted with two previous requests. I remind you that there are two sheets with design plan on our website ( that you can enlarge to isolate your property. Rolling Road renters, please pass this on to property management teams and ideally to the owner.

Household Trash – Last time I mention this (at least for a while), but household trash will be picked up on Mondays and Thursday if, and only if it is in your trash toter and not placed on the ground like in the good ol’ days. . The trash truck now has only one man who drives and operates the mechanical arms that lift the toter to dump into the truck. Recycle trash trucks still have a two person team.

Hawks – Former neighbor Henry Butler said that a pair of hawks that screech a lot are a nesting pair with chicks. Makes sense. Good thoughts for the Butler family knowing that Hurricane Dorian will wreak havoc at/near their NC home.

Jury Duty – I was selected to be one of 60 in a pool to fill 12 seats in the jury box at federal district court. I felt like I failed 4th grade PE class when not picked as one of those 12. Standing by for my next chance to climb that 30’ rope. Ha!

Opioid Overdose – Going way out on a limb here, but we have a village resident who can provide Narcan to families who may have a relative at risk of overdose. No charge. Did a bit of research and discovered that the nasal spray is intended to negate opioid overdose. Rather than dig myself in any deeper, you can also obtain Narcan from local pharmacies where most insurances cover it with no co-pay or very little and in many cases without a prescription. You probably already know that first responders already carry Narcan. Consult with your doctor and your pharmacist and then let me know if this gentleman’s offer will help you and your family.

Contractor Recommendation - Bill & Carie Mast (Landor Lane) used Orion Home Improvements. LLC to replace their roof and gutters. Business owner is Jeremiah Davies (571/354-0331 or his cell is 571/354-6821). Bill & Carie were impressed with his pricing guides, military discount, quality of work and cleanliness. Check out Orion’s website at You may want to email Jeremiah at Understand they also do windows and siding. Why didn’t they advertise in our directory?
